Shelter
Originally the Inuit lived with 5-10 people in bands, The Inuit had two homes, one for the winter and one for the summer. The summer home consisted of a tent made of a wooden frame, covered with caribou hide. In the winter they lived in sod homes, they dug a large hole where they wanted to live. To make the walls, they piled rocks and sod around the outside. They made the roof frame out of wood or whale bone then covered it in sod. In both summer and winter houses, they had raised platforms for where they would sleep. The Inuit are best known for the Igloo, an igloo is made of snow formed into blocks which are made into a dome shape. They are normally used for hunting trips during the winter, they were only temporary shelters, Igloos are considered to be one of the Inuit’s greatest inventions because of their warmth and they are easy to make. In modern times the Inuit usually live in small towns with stores.
